Don't IEP alone. The CSE kicks off this year's monthly Education Series with our annual Advocacy 101 program to help families feel more empowered to start the year. Join us for a presentation with local special education advocate, Lisa Lightner from ADayInOurShoes.com, who will share tips and resources so parents and caregivers can make more informed decisions for their students with IEPs, GIEPs and 504 plans. Lisa will share five things you can do this September to help make it a better, more successful school year for everyone. ABOUT THE SPEAKER LISA LIGHTNER Lisa Lightner is a Special Education Advocate who has served as a board member of numerous disability organizations and 501(c)3 nonprofits. She was named "Arc Advocate of the Year" in 2012 and is a former Compliance Monitor for the PA Bureau of Special Education. Lisa has also served as her county's chairperson for the Right to Education Task Force, a federally decreed group established in 1971 to ensure that all children in Pennsylvania had the opportunity to an education. When not attending IEP meetings with families or lobbying in Harrisburg and Washington, D.C. for disability rights, she can be found on the web at her IEP advice blog, "A Day In Our Shoes," sharing information, and resources to help parents make more informed decisions regarding their child with disabilities and their IEP meetings, how to communicate with schools and teachers, and other common questions. Lisa parents two boys, including one with Dup15q Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.
